Ascent Trip Report

Artski told us about "some cool rock" along WYO220 somewhere near Alcova. Coming from Casper it was considerably farther than Alcova than we expected, but we were able to identify that rock as Independence Rock which is a state-run historical site next to a rest area. It was quite hot out (in the 90Fs) and we set out on the sidewalk to the plaque where the slope is the most gentle and we had seen other people walking up. It looks pretty steep, but it wasn't too much for our Chaco sandals. On the way up we found names scratched into the stone from the Oregon (and other) Trail times. That was pretty cool. Near the top we also saw a jackrabbit which hurried under a large flake of rock with a gap between it and the main mass. The top was easy to find and we had a great view all around. The rock is a pretty cool spot to visit if you are driving by. I wanted to go down the way I came, but Katrina had other ideas. She went along the ridge of it, looking for somewhere else to come down on the parking lot side. She didn't find any, and had to come off the back and circle around. All of this took about 20 minutes of me standing at the bottom on the old road wondering what was going on and if she was okay. We were both dehydrated from hiking Cloud Peak, probably, and weren't making the best choices in the heat.
