Ascent Trip Report

We were only in DC for roughly 24 hours, squeezed in between a family reunion in Ocean City and a flight to Reykjavik from BWI. I didn't think going to the DC highpoint would be practical seeing as the only thing we prioritized was going to the Smithsonian, which isn't near Fort Reno. However, after looking at a map while we were staying at our friend Shaina's for the night, I noticed that we were staying maybe 2/3 mile from the top! In the morning I woke up early and set out on my own to be back in time to go and watch a Eurocup game at our other friend's apartment. All I had to do was leave the Brandywine Apartments and ascend Brandywine Street until I hit 38th street. The houses here are not too tightly packed, relatively old, and nice looking. At the almost three street intersection of Nebraska, 38th, and Chesapeake, There is a NPS sign in the northwest corner telling about Fort Reno. I went to the sign, then walked northwest uphill through a park area. When I neared the summit, which I thought was false, I dropped down to a path and started walking along the fenced area. Then I realized that the false summit might be the highest natural summit. I went back to the top of it, and in the grass I found the large Point Reno benchmark. There's a slight view through the trees in the park, but you can't see much beyond that. I walked back down to the sidewalks and went back the way I came. Someone was washing their convertible with the top down on the street. The morning was rather muggy despite not being very hot yet.
