Ascent Trip ReportDid a daytrip to NY/NJ from Manchester, NH with my buddy Chad to hike the highest point in New Jersey. Due to the long drive, we opted for the long way- the Shawangunk Ridge Trail from Greenville Turnpike, NY.
From the trailhead, the trail made its way toward the mountain at an easy grade, crossed a grassy road, then began the climb, with some ups and downs thrown in. Most of the NY section passed through private property, and the land on both sides of the trail was heavily posted, which made us a little uneasy. It was all good though, and a little less than halfway up, we crossed into New Jersey and came to a junction. We turned left to stay on the Shawangunk Ridge Trail, which dipped down and crossed a section of Cedar Swamp Trail on a very nice boardwalk. Wildlife and wildflowers abounded here.
After the pond crossing, we turned right onto Cedar Swamp Trail, which dumped us onto a paved park road that went by some camp/picnic sites. We followed the spur road to an auto road near a pond (swimmable), then followed the road a ways to a dirt path, which we took steeply up to the 1,803 ft. summit. It was my 9th U.S. state high point and Chad's 1st.
The summit of High Point was open with some rock outcrops and a parking area for state vehicles, but the centerpiece of the summit was the 221 ft. stone tower, which was open, so we climbed all the way to the top. It felt much harder than it should've been though due to the insanely high humidity (zero air circulation in the top). Spent a few up there, then walked back down and checked out the parking lot. After scoping it out, we headed for the Shawangunk Ridge Trail, which we took along and down the summit ridge back to the boardwalk junction, then went back the way we came.
