Ascent Trip ReportOur trailhead was at sea level at the south end of the quarry on the East side of the Bordoy to Kunoy causeway, where it is easy to park. (62.26942, -006.59238). You can usefully view the route to the summit plateau from the west side of the causeway.
We ascended steeply, directly up , on grass at the south end of the quarry to reach a traversing track after 20 minutes. A HEP pipe is buried underneath. We followed this left, north, to reach the rim of the basin and a green roofed ? Power workers' hut with 4 bunks and stove ( unlocked) .
On the north east side of the steep, rock banded basin is an obvious broken ramp with boulders and grass. Having clear enough weather to see this is very useful. We followed this up to a grassy level, then crossed this to the bottom of the next rock band. We took an upward traverse right through the next rock band, all easy, to reach a definite edge to the summit plateau after 1 h 30 min from the car. Thick cloud swirled around . We noted the point for descent with a small cairn.
The summit plateau is compressed gravel and moss with various small cairns and boulders. We decided that the high point was the north summit, ( 772m ) which has a 3 m blocky outcrop with cairn.( our GPS reading: 778m, 62.29513, -006.56594.)
It appears the south summit , with large cairn is frequently visited with the only summit book we found on this trip. Neither point had any survey mark that we could find. Official height 754m, our GPS 761m, 62.29079, -006.55751.
We returned the same way, using the GPS track to find the way off the summit plateau. ( 3h45 min round trip). Richard will upload his GPS track.
We camped for three nights at Klaksvik campsite on Bordoy. It was k100 per tent per night, payable at the tourist office in town, who also give you keys for the facilities. There is an out of hours number on the Internet which sometimes works, but worth emailing or phoning in office hours. The campsite is south east of the town centre overlooking the eastern shore of its southern fjord ( maybe 30 mins walk) . To reach the showers, kitchen ( fridge and cooking rings) and toilets from the car park and campervan electrical hook up area, you have to walk north through a children's nursery playground ! Water is inside locked kitchen, nearby stream doubtful.
