Ascent Trip Report

This is a fun 2.6 mile out and back hike up to Monument Peak but we decided to turn it into a 5 mile loop just to spend a little more time in the mountains today. A beautiful day for sure but also quite warm. We started at Big Laguna Trailhead with a nice .5 mile hike to the PCT, left turn on the PCT and a little uphill hike. At approximately 1 mile from the trailhead, the PCT turns left or north and we went straight or east on to a pretty obvious use trail. A nice steady climb up to the fenced building and then a short black top road up to the peak. Hard to miss with all the antennas. After a nice drink of water and signing the register we spent a few moments enjoying the beautiful view, so instead of going back the same way we decided to take the paved road back down and south to a locked gate on the right, about 1 mile from the peak and just before ascending the road to the old USAF station and dome. We took the dirt road to the right after crossing around the gate. This dirt road has not been used much but it took us quite a ways south before turning west and dropping down to cross with the Pacific Crest Trail. After approximately 1.5 miles of hiking back to the north on the PCT we reached the sign for the Big Laguna Trail and with a left or west onto the Big Laguna Trail and that .5 mile hike back to the trailhead we started at. Another great day on a peak with Kim.
