Ascent Trip ReportFrom Grants New Mexico get on Santa Fe Avenue and drive about two miles from Interstate into town. Landmark is Pizza Hut - turn just before it to right at light. You are now on NM 547. Set your trip odometer at zero. In about a mile or so at intersection of NM 547 aka Roosevelt and Lobo Canyon Dr. turn left on to Lobo canyon which is now NM 547. When your odometer hits about 11 ( if you hit gravel at pavement end you have gone 200 yards too far). To left is big wooden display with map. You want to take dirt road directly across NM 547 from display. A real issue right now is many signs and markers have been vandalized and shot up in this area. As you start on the dirt road you are on FR 193 but first hundred yards or more it says 2416 and then is noted as 193. Go five miles down dirt road - pretty rough at times - definitely recommend high clearance vehicle. At 5 miles you are at Trail 77 parking lot.
This hike is just tremendous. I took more photos on this hike than any other . About 1.5 miles through rolling hills- wooded terrain pines and aspen, lots of wildflowers and small blooming cacti. When you cross meadow and wooden bridge you break left in about 150 yards to stay on Trail 77. Well marked. I bet this would be an even better hike in late September with the Aspen. Anyway, once you burst out of forest, winding trail in high meadows with a few pines here and there. Cairn at top but register gone. Views were just beautiful on a clear windy day. Meant two very nice couples on the way up. One couple hike this every Wednesday and Sunday they can - " our Church." Other were 450 miles into CDT trail and were great about answering every question I could think of.
I have not hiked much in New Mexico but so far this is on my must do list.
By the way - on the way back - go back exactly the same 5 mile dirt route you came in- FR 193 makes an additional 10 mile stretch for a 15 mile loop to NM 547. You may be tempted to see even more of this great country. Do not do it - just horrific road conditions. Great scenery but not worth it
