Ascent Trip ReportFull Monticello Loop:
Big day from Pine Creek Campground with the loop to East Jefferson (Patsy Peak) Middle and North Jefferson (Sally Hemings Peak) and then down the north face to old overgrown trails looping back. Saw 7 Bighorn sheep on Patsy near the summit, got pretty close as I startled them over a rise, 3 very large rams. Ended up seeing 10 more at ~9400 feet on the rounded east ridge of Sally Hemings Peak. This is a beautiful canyon with the finest and purest Limber pine forst I have ever come across, especially in the drainage north of of Sally Hemings. The aspen was blooming the grass green. I feel bad for those that choose a different route. There are a plethora of springs and the water is delicious and needs no filtering. The best part of the day is when we were rounding off the north slope of Sally Hemings (North Jeff) to glissade the northeast coulior we found a fine bleached bighorn ram skull that we were able to keep safe all the way back home. The trail present on old maps down here is badly overgrown and it is difficult to say when a human was last here. We found big aspens with inscriptions from 1910 to 1954, but nothing since then. We located it, but it wasnt a very quick trail until we traversed to the spring above the Little North Fork of Pine Creek and then it was easy to get down. There is one spectacular campsite on the south Fork that should be held out for if doing this as an overnight. I highly recommend this route either the full loop for the adventurous or just the pine Creek up and back. We also noticed the possibility for a shorter and maybe more pleasant (trailwise) option with a trail that came off the east ridge of Middle Jefferson and down into the South Fork of pine Creek (the north branch with the small pond). Enjoy this area as much as we did!
