Ascent Trip ReportOriginally wanted to get Griff and Unicorn. I highly recommend doing this in the winter. Easy hike to Hurricane Hill, then started down around the ridge to Griff. Some easy snow travel until the ridge forms a saddle. On the way up, the route is completely littered with downfall from the fire in 2003. The short trek up the ridge to Griff is absolutely miserable. The slippery footing and mess of trees down everywhere were not fun to get through. We got to Griff in 4 hours, but were pretty shot. Hiked the ridge west heading over to Unicorn. Some route finding, but nothing too difficult. At the 5 hour point we were to the base of the approach on Unicorn. Saw some weather coming in and decided to turn back. Took 4 hours to get back to trailhead. 9 hour slog in rain. We are contemplating trying a summer attempt at Unicorn Peak and Horn via Griff creek trail from Elwa basin in order to get around all the deadfall from the standard approach. Anyone tried that route? I will post if we attempt. |
