Ascent Trip ReportI came to Vermont's Groton State Forest to bushwack Butterfield and Signal Mountains as reported yesterday. I had to use the Stillwater State Park campground at the North end of Groton Lake as my base since most the the Forest was closed ...it will only open this weekend, Memorial Day.
Prior to driving home today I decided to climb the small summits in the Osborne Pond area of New Discovery State Park, at the North end of the Forest.
I left Stillwater campground and travelled North on route #232 to the New Discovery State Park entrance and on to the Osborne Pond picnic pavilion on the West side of the Pond. From the South side of the pavilion I hiked the Osborne Pond Loop trail (blue blazed) in an anticlockwise direction from where the first side trail leads to LITTLE DEER MOUNTAIN and the second side trail, further around the loop and past the pond outlet, leads to DEER MOUNTAIN.
Both are short easy climbs with good views of Groton Lake. Return the same way to the pavilion.....about 3 hours, 4.1 miles round trip.
Drive back up the road a very short distance (.3 miles) to the signed OWLSHEAD MOUNTAIN trail head parking on the left. Hike about 500 feet on a wide grassed track to the Trail Head Register and the start of the trail on the left.
Another short easy climb to the summit of Owlshead Mountain (about 2 hours, 3 miles round trip). The summit offers an octagonal stone structure and an outstanding panorama to the West..... a new interpretation plaque identifies the peaks.
Alternately you can drive to within .2 miles of the summit. The road starts on rte #232 just west of the Entrance to New Discovery State Park.
