Ascent of Shirttail Peak on 2016-05-29
|Date:||Sunday, May 29, 2016|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||4100 ft / 1249 m|
Ascent Trip ReportFollowed Bob Burd's drive route to where an unsigned dirt road goes up towards the Old American Mine. This dirt road had an unlocked gate, so I drove in about 2.4 miles further up the road. 4WD was needed for a short section just past the unlocked gate due to a water-eroded road bed. Further up the road is terribly overgrown with brush from the road sides. I don't recommend driving it unless you don't mind brush scraping the sides of your vehicle. I managed to turn the Jeep around at a tight junction and park it (2.4 miles up this road, as noted already) and started walking the road the remaining 1000 ft of gain to the summit. I could not have driven farther in anyway due to a large downed tree across the road about a quarter mile from where I parked. Some views at the summit, but a bit too brushy for great views. There used to be a lookout tower on the summit but no trace of it anymore.
