Ascent Trip Report

We stopped in the ranger station off of AR7 to the east of the highpoint and got a map seeing as I haven't yet bought a Delorme for this state. We turned off the paved road onto FR11 heading west. The road was good gravel, which was good because we were in a Corolla and doing a lot of miles. We were surprised to find some in-holdings, including a house with a mailbox. At one point, we had to get out and break branches, as a tree had fallen across the road. Luckily, the crown came just short of the opposite side of the road, and so we were able to get around it after our cleanup by hand by only driving over one small stubborn branch. After a few more miles we turned left onto a smaller road which crossed a creek with a paved bed which made it easy to ford. We then took a right at the t intersection followed by a left shortly after. The road then heads south, but different from what the topo shows, the road naturally turned towards Ouachita Pinnacle and we did not have to turn right and leave the road we were on. Once we saw the signs for the crossing of the Ouachita Trail, we turned around and parked. I wanted to get some gain, and not just drive to the top. Katrina had a bit of a head start, and she was halfway up by the time I caught her. The road was decent gravel and switchbacked up the east face. As the road flattened out, we passed a radio tower and then found the benchmark just west of a second one. The benchmark looked high, but so did the ground under the tall grass within the fenced area of the second tower. We found the ground maybe five feet away from the benchmark to be the highest, with no need to go in the fenced area. There was a power line cut to the south which provided great views of the forest and Lake Ouachita. On the way out we tried to find a new driving route west and after many turns, river rock surface roads, and more stream fords, we found our way back to the pavement and headed for a grocery store lunch in Mount Ida.
