Ascent Trip Report

After bagging the idea of hiking up to Rich Mountain from the Ouachita Trail starting in Eagle Gap due to the late hour of the day, we drove up the mountain and parked at the lot right next to the top. We were disappointed to find that the fire tower was fenced off with a locked gate when it actually had steps leading up instead of a ladder. Also on top was an old outhouse, some rose bushes, and large concrete numbers that read 910 or 016. I'm not sure what the numbers would be for. The benchmark is in a tall metal tube that is no longer fixed firmly in place. After reaching the summit and getting no views, we drove to the next turnout to the west to enjoy vistas from nearly the highest point in this county and national forest. The drive to Oklahoma to the west was spectacular and highly recommended. Clouds were zipping by from south to north as we drove west and it felt like a dream sequence. We had the area to ourselves and pulled over many times while cool weather and clouds came in and night settled. We stayed at the Winding Stair Campground.
