Ascent Trip Report

From the Humboldt exit you head south and the road passes the first mining activity then heads toward the mountain at an unmanned facility, I don't know what it is exactly. If you go until the frontage road ends it takes you up to a gated mining operation. I went up Eldorado Canyon up past the empty houses where you immediately start climbing. I went up to about 7200 feet then parked, not wanting to push it. My 4x4 Mercedes ML 320 probably could have gone another 1000 feet but it does get a little steep and scary, if you slide off the road it's all over. The road does not get all that rough though, I was just worried about traction on the moist road. While hiking there was a significant snow bank crossing the road at about 8600 feet which would stop any vehicle. If you had good traction and were used to driving roads like this I'm sure you could make it almost to the top. I list the climb as class 2 because the snowfield was not insignificant and I almost wished I had an ice axe.
