Ascent Trip ReportI was able to follow David Sanger's directions from 2014 without incident. Scales Road is about 12.6 miles from the junction of La Porte and Oregon Hill Roads, past Strawberry Valley. I'd recommend just turning at the signed intersection rather than using the connecting road from the turnout.
I was able to easily drove up to the turnout where the gravel part of 21N68Y ends (as described by SummitPost and others) with my Subaru Forester, although 21N68Y has a bit of plant life between roadside trees and plant growth in the middle. There were no other vehicles around on this Sunday. There were signs warning of road construction on Scales Road in the vicinity of the Slate Creek bridge, but I didn't notice anything else to indicate that construction was ongoing.
As others have said, the stump and stick structure is easily identifiable although there is no sign of a register present.
