Ascent Trip Report

The trailhead is at the southern end of the western-most (and lowest) parking lot at Burke Mountain Resort. The trail starts out as a wide path following gentle grades, and after a while turns into steeper single-track trail. The footing is generally pretty good until you get fairly high on the mountain. The trail splits into blue and red-blazed segments once you reach the lower shelter. I followed the blue trail on the way up. The blue and red-blazed segments rejoin near the upper shelter.

Near the top, the trail skirts past the edge of the ski area, taking you toward the communication towers and the fire tower at the summit. I climbed the fire tower, and enjoyed the view from the cab. Most of the glass panes were intact, providing protection from the chilly breeze. There is a good view which includes many of the Vermont high peaks, Willoughby Gap, plus an interesting up-close view of the neighboring mountains. The fire tower is right next to one of the other towers, so the view is partially blocked in one direction.

I then headed back down, this time taking the red branch when the trail splits.
