Ascent Trip Report

Out and back to "Panther Peak" along border slash starting at new logging road that ends at border north of the east shore of Cupsuptic Pond, ME. arrived at TH in middle of active/ongoing manhunt by US Border Patrol!! Informed that they had one in custody but still searching for another right in the area beside the slash where I was hiking.Told them I was carrying a handgun and said I would change plans if they advised. They told me to go about my business which, with a some trepidation, I did. Made it out and back without seeing anyone but got buzzed by 2 different helicopters 3 times and could hear ATVs on both sides of the border. Driving out I encountered the same BP agent who told me Canadian patrol and Maine game wardens were also now involved but they still hadn't captured him 7 hours later. So much for peaceful solitude.
If you use this route be sure to keep to your country's side of the border especially if you are carrying as I am pretty sure there are surveillance devices along it.
