Ascent Trip Report

Drive north from Austin on highway 305 to a dirt road heading east through a cattle guard about 1/4 mile south of a rest area. A high clearance vehicle will get you to the canyon entrance when the road is dry, about 3 miles(4x4 if wet). You could drive a 4x4 to within 1000ft of summit with about 5 small stream crossings but what challenge is that? I had a car so I parked just inside the cattle guard. The road follows a stream then starts to switchback above the streambed on the north side to a saddle at approx 6800ft, from there climb the west slope with patchy scree fields and knee-high sagebrush to the ridgeline (8200ft) then its an easy walk to the summit. Register is in a mason jar.
