Ascent Trip ReportAfter leaving Ponil (see Hart Peak trip report), crew 612-A hiked to Pueblano on Day 5, then through French Henry to Miranda on Day 6. On Day 7 we left Miranda just after dawn and hiked up through Black Horse Camp then joined the trail coming from Baldy Town up to the summit ridge. The top several hundred vertical feet of Baldy is basically loose scree. There is a clear trail, but it's slow going as you have to take care not to slip while climbing. After reaching the summit we took shelter behind one of the previously-built wind breaks, then made our way down the western face of the peak. We followed the ridge to the northwest through open meadows and wrapped around to the east, coming across several piles of snow amongst the trees. We took the heavily-switchbacked trail down to Copper Park, then followed the road south the Baldy Camp and then made our way back to Miranda. The total hike was about 17 miles.
Note that the 'extra elevation' consists mainly of the terrain covered on days 5 and 6. |
