Ascent Trip Report

A Missouri 300 foot Prominent Peak, 31st highest of probably 79 peaks. The trip report by Edward Earl is excellent and needs no improvement. I am only documenting my stupidity on this climb. I followed the ATV trail as described until it clearly started descending. A 90 degree easy bushwack to the top followed. At the top I saw an old ATV trail, so I checked my GPS, which seemed to parallel the return, so I followed it. After quite a distance it petered out and I started bushwack back to my ascent line. I don't use GPS much and I am not familiar with my device (first one). After an hour of buschwacking up and down, over streams, through briar patches, over fallen dense tree areas, I stumbled upon two hunters. I had on my wireless headphones, listening to my death metal. I was making a lot of noise. I scared away their turkey. I finally realized the track I was following was leading me back to St. Louis, not my Hummer. The blue line I was following was straight, not squiggly. So I finally figured I had to do some serious backtracking. Guess what? I stumbled upon the hunters again. They had the turkey in their sites. I humbly asked if they knew the way to the forest road. They pointed in the direction I was heading (thank goodness). Eventually I bushwacked to the forest road and found my car. If you depend on a GPS device, make sure you understand it! A one hour hike ended up three times longer. Lesson learned.
