Ascent Trip Report

This was a double Mount Si trip: up the old trail, down the new trail, back up the new trail, and back down the old trail. What a workout!

We started off from the Little Mount Si trailhead just after 07:30. Hardly any cars in the lot at that time. We took the second (shorter and steeper) turnoff up the Boulder Garden Loop to the Mount Si - Old Trail, and continued all the way up to the base of the Haystack. After a brief pause, we descended the mountain via the New Trail and had lunch by the parking lot at the bottom. Then it was time to head up again-- this time just to the first junction with the Old Trail rather than all the way to the base of the Haystack again. We ended up with a total distance and elevation gain of 12.5 miles/6200 ft in 7 hours.

Both trails are in good condition. There were some minor muddy spots, but the trails were clear of blowdowns and other obstacles. There was some fresh snow at the very top, but the trail was snow-free all the way to the boulder field and there was only about an inch at the base of the Haystack. We lucked out with the weather: what had been forecast to be a wet, stormy day turned out to be mostly dry and clear. Although we started off with light, steady rainfall and encountered some passing showers (and a brief hail storm), all in all it was not a bad day to be out on the trail :-)
