Ascent Trip Report

I was meeting some friends on the summit who were finishing the JMT. I got to the permit office two days early to check on permits. They didn't have any overnight permits and said I would have to come back the next day. However, I got back in line and found that they had a 2 night permit. I decided I would do a 2 day ascent with camps at Lone Pine Lake and Trail Camp. Started up Whitney Trail from Whitney Portal about an hour and a half before sunset. By the time I made it to Lone Pine Lake it was already dark. Set up my tent and went to bed. I took my time waking up in the morning, making breakfast, and getting ready to move camp since I had a short day to get to Trail Camp. I spent the evening hanging out in camp and watching people come down in a thunderstorm. The storm must have had a few people freaked out. It was amazing to me that people were still coming down the switchbacks well after dark. Some were even headed all the way down to Whitney Portal that night. I packed light leaving most of my gear in camp and headed out around midnight with another guy (can't recall his name) I met on the trail who was on the same schedule. We made the summit right in the middle of sunrise though I think we missed the best of it. We found Kevin and Shanon on the summit with some people they met on the JMT. We all celebrated, enjoyed the views, and took some photos before heading down. Everybody else enjoyed some rest at trail camp while I packed my gear. Once back down in Whitney Portal we had some food before heading to the hotel.
