Ascent Trip Report

I hiked this with the Catskill 3,500 group. Conditions for today had fresh snow ranging from a dusting to up to 6". It was cold around 25 with wind speeds of 25mph and stronger gusts.

We headed to the Escarpment trail to climb Blackhead first. This was a fun trail that's steep and has lots of scrambles (my favorite type of hiking)!!! Unfortunately, a member of our group wasn't feeling well so it took us longer to ascend which is difficult when it's so cold.

The descent to the col was extremely windy, as it's mostly exposed, but moderate wind and temps. 2 members of our group left us so there were 3 left for the hike. We hiked up Black Dome which has a couple of scrambles but isn't as steep or long as Blackhead. The trail along the top is in the woods. We descended to the col, the winds were very strong on the descent, but we found a nice place to have lunch and the sun graced us with its presence.

The hike up Cole was fairly easy and we hiked the ridge to Camel's Hump. The weather had cleared and there were some nice views that you could see through the leaveless trees.

The descent was fairly easy with 1 steep area where a member of our group fell but she was able to finish the hike.

I really enjoyed this hike. As the youngest member of the group I did most of the trail breaking through the powdery snow.

Map my hike: 8.06 miles, 2,520' gain, 6.5 hours. You could easily do this in less time.
