Ascent Trip ReportJames Barlow's right turn is the key to this route. I don't see evidence on any maps that you can walk roads all the way from the Hathaway Road gate. The right turn he describes is in a new clearcut and looks like just a spur, but once it enters the trees it is truly an old road bed that is still very easily navigated. Not too long after getting onto that road it opened up and had been used more recently for some clearcuts farther south. We had less snow than earlier reports, so it wasn't until quite a ways up that road that the snow was deep enough for snowshoes, and even then it wasn't adequate for keeping them on for the shortcut through the second growth trees until we were pretty close to the ridge road's saddle above. Our route through the trees was probably as good as any, although we did have to drop through a minor drainage to keep it viable with our snowshoes on.
BTW, Greg Slayden's track is now completely unnavigable because of new clearcuts. They are so new that there is still huge amounts of slash. I suspect that will be cleaned up someday, but it is impossible to walk through now. The new road that switchbacks up the hill was clearly not there in 2009.
