Ascent Trip ReportHere's a trip report for an ascent of Spruce Mtn from Noyes Pond. Spruce Mtn is a very popular Central Vermont hike . The Trail from Plainfield is steep but pretty easy. I've done it 5 or 6 times. This report is for a bushwhack ascent from Seyon Ranch at Noyes pond in Groton which is about 3 miles to the south east of Spruce.
Seyon Ranch ( former trout fishing camp and now a state of Vermont rustic inn) is a wonderful place to visit. The pond is beautiful and undeveloped. There are views of Spruce and SIgnal Mountain. My friend Saul had made two unsuccessful attempts from here to Spruce. For this effort we had the benefit of my GPS. We skied to the far end of the pond and up the incoming stream for about 200 yards. Ditching the skis, we turned to the north only to be enveloped in a think spruce thicket - awful. Somehow we extricated ourselves by following moose tracks. We then moved in a northwesterly direction to the base of the unnamed ridge to the south east of Spruce. This was a rugged boulder and blowdown strewn landscape. Finally we made it to the col near Spruce and the landscape opened up - this was probably at 2800-2900 ft. It was an easy climb to the summit from here.
From the summit we were able plan the return with a view of the landscape below. Essentially we took a straight shot down the east slope and then followed the upper reaches of south branch of the Wells River. This was only possible because the swampy areas that feed the brook were frozen and there was little snow. In any other weather I recommend hiking along the foot of the lower north flank of Signal Mountain to Spruce. This is to the south of Noyes Pond. This route is mostly deciduous forest.
Altogether a very difficult bushwhack of about 6 miles.
