Ascent Trip ReportAfter back packing camp day 1 at at junction of Timber Gap Creek Trail and Cliff Creek Trail we began an ascent on Black Rock Pass. This is one of the hardest backpacking climbs I have ever completed since we were still early in our acclimation cycle (less than 20 hours leaving Florida)carrying 45 pound packs up 6,500 feet of vertical gain on a very steep swtichback that was grueling. One backpacker in party (Frank)developed horrible blisters the size of baseballs in his heels and was miserable for the rest of our trip and it ruined his backpacking experience for the rest of his trip(he has never returned to backpack with us...since)
Upon achieving the saddle, Drake and I dropped packs and scrambled the nearby peaks at over 12,000 feet and rock formations prior to backpacking back down to base camp 2 at site near Little Five Lakes. The ascent started the day before at Redwood Meadow Grove at around 5600 Ft. This national park is as beautiful as I have ever hiked in.
The descent down was to the lower saddle at 9830 (see TR for Sawtooth for details).
Gain info:
TH at Atwell - 6520 to first ridge line at 8520 = 2000 small saddle = 200 Redwood Meadow to Black Rock Pass 5000 to 11600 with packs then scramble to North BR Pass Peak at 12172 = 7172
Total Gain = 9372 Extra Gain = 7172-9372 = 2,200
