Ascent Trip ReportOn a cultural tour of Franken, we took a short side trip out of Bayreuth, the home of Wagner, to climb to the summit of Schneeberg. As my friend Chris had only cross-trainers with him and as there was a decent amount of snow in places despite the recent melt, we chose the summit road for part of the ascent and all of the descent. Parking was possible for one or two cars without blocking the entrance to the summit road, a nicer alternative would have been to park a little downhill (west) and take a more scenic path through the forest. At the summit, some historical interest was provided by signboards detailing the military history and strategic importance of the site. The large cold war listening station was only deconstructed a few years ago and the site returned to something like a natural state (even the rickety wooden tower sitting astride the summit block was rebuilt from the original wood). In the howling gale this wobbled alarmingly as we climbed it and as the rain turned to snow we didn't hang around. The day ended with a visit to a couple of Bayreuth's highly recommendable brewpubs (especially Maisels) |
