Ascent Trip ReportI followed Hans Haustein's directions from his August 15, 2001 trip report and got to the 2203-foot summit benchmark area without too much trouble, but all the numbers on the roads have been changed. This caused me to make one wrong turn that I discovered after driving about a mile in the wrong direction. Once I reached the place where the road "abruptly ends," according to Hans, I started walking the jeep trail. I quickly determined that this road was not much worse than the road I had been driving on already, so I got back in my car and drove the "jeep trail" in my 1991 Ford Festiva all the way to a spot that was only 370 feet from the 2203-foot summit. From here there was a mild bushwhack with a few thorns to the highpoint, although I was unable to find the benchmark mentioned above. I was also unable to find neither the rock cairn nor the register left by Hans. There was no view here due to the trees, but on the drive up there are several magnificent vistas to the north and west of the valley far below. I did not visit the second candidate for Searcy County's highpoint but, Hans wrote, "I feel the first area is higher than the second area..." Looking at the extremely small 2200-foot contour line of the second area on the topo map, compared to the first area, I believe Hans is correct and he actually visited both places. |
