Ascent Trip ReportParked the car near Elbow creek, Gilmantown Road east of Speculator, west of Wells, NY. Drove to the trail head near a dam, hitting the trail at 8:44. There was NO SAFE WAY to cross the creek, so we drove down the road to the next parking area, near a bridge over the creek. Initially we had to climb a steep icy ridge. We bushwhacked between Overrrocker Mt to the east and Hamilton Mt., to the west. We hit our 1st stop, a pond, on the SE side of Round Mt. We stayed high as we followed the outlet downstream. When we stopped to check the map and investigated a large Vly. On the way there we could see Hamilton Mt., to the west. This is an intermediate source of Jimmy Creek, with the earlier pond being one of the upstream branches. From here we headed toward a knoll on the un-named peak, to the south of Dunham. As we climbed, we could see a few cliffs in the general direction of the Dunham summit. We hit the knoll and then we turned to head north, again. As we approached the steeper sections of the climb we looked east and could just make out the Great Sacandaga Reservoir. As we climbed higher, we ran into some cliffs and some great views. To our NW was a large rock outcropping that we wanted to visit. We climbed up and around the rock cliffs and reached the top. As we headed for where we expected the summit, we ran into a cairn (2599’), but there were higher spots farther west. We finally found the highest point at 2617’. Just below the summit, to the SW, we saw the outcropping and we headed for it. It had great views east to south to the west. |
