Ascent Trip Report

I parked at the end of the road at Calico Basin. Kraft Mountain stands there in front of you to the north. It's pretty in pink. My plan was to reach the western peak so from the lot, I used the trail that veers to the left towards the western flank of Kraft. This trail climbs up 5 stop hill. Anyone in good shape can push to the top of this hill to the saddle area, but why mess with such a neat name. When I reached the saddle, I turned right and found whatever looked like the best way to off-road it up into the rocks protruding and protecting the side of Kraft. There appeared to be several potential avenues up. It's really scenic in this section with big high rocks and some have peppermint lollipop like coloring. There's no actual trail here, but as you proceed up, the landscape seems to pull you along towards a big bouldery ridge that overlooks a hidden plateau area. I followed this boulder ridge basically to the peak area that stares over Calico Basin. There's unique rock features everywhere and I used a few of them as markers. At the top overlooking Calico and the rest of the marvelous Red Rock area, it is very contenting.
