all the views on the hike to mount carmel are along skinner ridge or at devil's peak. the peak location in the database doesn't seem to be exactly the high point, so i added a waypoint at the HP.
the point i noted "ventana view" is just that: an awesome view of various ventana peaks, and the "ventana" feature itself. on my descent i sat here for 15 minutes eating half of a large sandwich i had picked up from bruno's deli & market in monterey.
along the ridge descending from devil's peak i went off trail to a point that looked like it would have a better ocean view: and sure enough it did, but there was another peak in the distance partially blocking the view, it seemed to be part of skinner ridge. after consulting the USGS topo map a bit i became convinced it was the peak marked "3332". it appeared to have a nice round top with grass and very few trees: likely to have better views to the west/ocean. seemed like a worthy goal to add to the return trip.
from the point marked "ocean view" i went down an old bulldozed firebreak, with lots of regrowth. it was steep, occasionally slippery, and there were a lot of plants to dodge around. wasn't as fun as i thought it would be, and definitely wasn't faster than taking the nicely groomed trail i used on the ascent.
the turn off to head to peak 3332 was pretty easy to guess at: although some trail workers had dumped a bunch of cut tree branches in the way. after getting past those i was presented with a faint use trail, eventually leading to yet another grown-back bulldozed fire break. this lead up and over one hill and then peak 3332 was ahead. the ocean view from there was rewarding as expected: pico blanco on the left, and bixby mountain on the right, and a view straight down the valley to the ocean. i ate the other half of my sandwich while looking out at the pacific.
oh yeah, as others have mentioned in their trip reports, no trip to bottcher's gap is complete without a chat with larry, the camp manager. somehow nobody had yet explained to him the nature of the CC list and why people keep coming to climb mount carmel, despite the lack of views (or as he put it "no views until the next fire").
