Ascent Trip ReportIn anticipation of my visit, I checked out the Currituck County GIS map, which has 2-foot contours. These indicate that Luark Hill (known locally as Penny's Hill) is no longer the Currituck COHP.
Luark was listed at 20 meters on the USGS topo but now tops out at 42 feet on GIS. By contrast, the middle dune at Three Dunes (20.5 meters per the USGS) rises to 52 feet on GIS. See my trip report for Three Dunes. As far as I'm concerned, Three Dunes is the undisputed COHP, unless Luark has a growth spurt.
However ... Luark is still listed as the COHP in the Peakbagger database, so you need to be able to claim it to get credit for Currituck County on Peakbagger's automated NC COHP list.
If you want to go, contact Joshua Haight at Corolla Jeep Adventures at (252) 453-6899 or (252) 453-0077, or email CorollaAdventures@gmail.com. The dune is privately owned and is strictly posted for No Trespassing, so you will be wise to get permission. They rent 4-wheelers and jeeps that can get you there.
If you have good 4WD and high clearance, you can drive on the beach from the end of NC12 to the vicinty of the HP, saving yourself a long walk on the beach. We made it in a 2004 Mazda Tribute (essentially a Ford Escape) with an expert driver (my son). If you have any doubts, don't try it. You will be driving on soft sand, not the hard-packed beach you may have seen in places like Daytona. There is a good chance you will get stuck. We helped push one big SUV out of a rut, and tow-trucks were busy up and down the beach.
Luark Hill is now just 42 feet, according to the Dare County GIS. Blue is 20-ft contours, red is 4-ft intervals, and gold is 2-ft intervals.
