Ascent Trip Report

Interesting enough, my gps map (from the notable James B) had a second mountain icon listed as Mount Chatham, right by the skidder summit, the web also listed the summit coordinates as the same. Weird.

Adrian and I set out to start the peak bagging new year with some low level peaks, weary of the snow conditions, and also a 50 percent chance of showers. . We met at Hood Canal bridge at five and were at the Big Skidder Hill start gate at just past 5:30. We followed Eric Noel's directions walking at first with head lamps. Bermed road was initially tricky with no light but we forged on to the spectacular summit, and also made a quick stop at the lookout remnants on the clearing by the last switchback before the summit. With the sun coming out strong, the weather promising, and no snow on the ground at 2200 feet, we were optimistic and decided to make a scouting trip or potential summiting of the fabled Mount Crag. We hurried to the jeep and down to Dosewallips for the long approach in, the road just after Mount Walker being washed out.

The roads in started promising with approx 4 inches of snow on the roads at 2000 feet and our first glimpses of Crag found here covered in snow. As we made the turn onto the approach road that would take us behind Crag, the snow on the road started to build quick with over half a foot, before we got even close to the 2900ish foot bifurcated road start point of the treck. At least we established that you absolutely need a 4x4 due to water bars and that there cannot be snow.

We decided to check out Pluto Peak, the road start point with lower elevation. This proved futile as a large tree blocked the road just after the turn. Had to have been after 22November,my last attempt, also futile because of a low clearance vehicle.

We set off for Webb Mountain, our original second destination.
