Ascent Trip ReportFinally hiked the tallest summit in Mass. While in my backyard, bypassed so many times for VT and NH. We left for the day, 2 car-ing it, planning on an end to end, from Jones Nose up to the TH on Pattison Rd. I knew part of Rockwell Rd was closed in the winter however I thought it would be open up to the upper TH - I was wrong. Instead of walking 2 miles up a road, we decided to start at the Hopper Rd TH. We started the hike late at 1030ish due to the plan change and took Hopper Trail all the way to Greylock summit, where we looked around for a bit and ate lunch. Nice view of Monadnock up there. We had very little snow to deal with on the West side of the mountain, just a dusting. We continued up the AT and summited Fitch. After this point the snow on the trail picked up a lot, and after slipping a couple of times realized there was ice under the snow and put on the microspikes. We continued to Mt Williams, then headed over to prospect vista and headed back to the Pattison Rd TH by the reservoir. I'd say microspikes were essential from Fitch onward and my buddy had a terrible time of staying upright without them. Some spots on the trail had up to 6in snow, but mostly well packed, no need for snowshoes.
