Ascent Trip Report

I started from the east side of the mountain, using the trailhead at the end of West Union Street, behind Burr & Burton Academy. The trailhead parking lot was empty when I arrived at 7:30 am.

The lower-elevation trails showed signs of heavy winter use, with numerous tracks and abundant ice. Many of the footprints branched off onto other trails, with fewer tracks continuing higher up the Blue Summit Trail. I was seeing fewer and fewer tracks on the summit trail the higher up I got, but at least a few people had hiked all the way to the top fairly recently. The snow depth increased with elevation, but the powdery snow was never much more than 6" deep on the trail. There were drifts a foot deep or more at the summit.

I enjoyed the view from the summit, despite the cold wind in the open areas. I wore snowshoes on the descent, mainly just to help smooth out the trail as it was getting a little lumpy. I switched back to light traction once I got lower down where the trail was mostly ice. The parking lot was full when I returned, with a few more cars parked on the street. The parking lot was a busy place by then, with multiple pairs and groups of hikers getting ready to set out. I was happy to answer a couple of questions about the trail conditions.

I hiked up in 80 minutes, and then spent 10 minutes at the summit walking around and enjoying the views. My descent took 55 minutes. It was still fairly early once I finished the hike (quarter after ten as I was leaving), so I drove a bit and then hiked a couple more peaks in the area.
