Ascent Trip Report2 areas atop Lookout Mountain--ended up parking at the upper terminus of the incline railway at a metered spot. Future visitors can probably just park at the base of the water tower and avoid the charges.
Northern area: from the car, made a sharp uphill left turn onto Bragg, and reached highest ground within a minute. The yards on the west side of the road are definitely higher than the east. My vote would go toward the front yard of 814, or one of the two houses directly north of it. I walked by with my cousin and her dog, and a golden retriever in the 814 yard came over to bark at us. We kept walking, and I returned here after visiting the water tower, without my cousin. The dog was inside by then, and I took ten seconds to wander into the front yard along the walkway and a few trees, and called it good.
Southern area at the water tower: I was planning to hop the fence, but once I got there, realized I had no idea how I could! It's tall and wooden without any good ways to surmount it. Had to settle for tagging highest ground on the steep little hill outside the fence at a few spots around the tower. Peering through the slats, ground inside the tower looked only barely higher, maybe no more than a foot. This would have to do.
Yay last peak on the MLK Jr "I Have a Dream" list. We briefly enjoyed the very limited views from near the railway station (we were at the base of the clouds), and then drove back to Knoxville for my interview dinner.
