Ascent Trip ReportAnother beautiful Saturday in March for hiking. Left the Adirondack Loj at around 9:15 a.m. and took the Van Hoevenburg trail right on up to the summit. First 2 miles, up to Marcy Dam, were pretty icy and slick in spots, but we were fine bare-booting up a ways. Had lunch at Indian Falls and threw on the snowshoes. The trail was very solid and hardly any ice unless you went out of the track, where the unbroken snow had a layer of ice on top. As we got closer, we met several people coming down off the summit and by the time we reached it, we had the summit to ourselves. The hike down was pretty quick and we were back at the car at 6:25 p.m. It was also the last day to get a high peak to count as a winter one, so it was a nice way to end the "winter" season. |
