Ascent Trip ReportAfter Saddleback and The Horn, I drove right away to the Bigelow road and headed straight to the camping trailhead. The road was tight, I was wondering what would happen if someone came the other way. About a mile in there was a little hill and my car got grabbed by a track going straight on the side. I was stuck. I was rolling over half a foot of packed snow and any spin would sink in. I was trying to get out when I saw Martin come by. Seeing my stuck there he tried to go back and got stuck too. Long story short, we managed to get out after about an hour and a half. Don’t go there if you don’t have a 4x4 and even then it’s advisable not to, a guy living there told us they had to pull many cars out.
So we left, a very long walk the we wore snowshoes until the end. We started at around 1500 feet, which gives the mountain some very good gain, so it started climbing pretty steeply. The trail was broken already so we moved pretty fast. We crossed two parties and one guy told me the trail to The Horns was broken too. Up there the view was worth the trip. Lots of lakes and white trees with black clouds on top of everything. We did Avery, then Bigelow. Martin had to leave to the hotel and I continued towards The Horns. The trail was not broken but orienting proved to be easy. It was the first day, so pushing through snow was a good workout. At the Horns, I also went for the Horns North and it’s really worth it. It has nice view on the range.
From this point on I had to use my headlamp. The round trip took about 15 minutes. I didn’t expect to come back by headlamp and was anticipated a long walk trying to find the trail, but I got very lucky, right after the Horns Pond, there was some booter tracks with his dog that went back to the register. I still broke trail with the snowshoes, but this must have saved me at least 1 hour. The trip back was a very long walk.
