Ascent of Old Speck on 2015-12-26

| Elevation:||4160 ft / 1267 m|
Ascent Trip ReportStarting from the trailhead in Grafton Notch on Rte. 26, I ascended Old Speck via the Eyebrow and Old Speck Trails, and descended on the Old Speck Trail.
Snow has not yet arrived, as cold air has been late in arriving to New England. I encountered spring-like trail conditions in places at low elevations, with some mud. Higher up, I experienced typical nasty late-fall trail conditions, with no snow but with ice on many of the rocks. I had to be careful, especially while descending steep parts of the trail at higher elevations. I enjoyed the summit view, but didn't climb the tower as the upper rungs of the ladder looked icy.
There are some nice views from the Eyebrow Trail, but you have to be careful. Use extra care where the trail crosses the slabby area (the spot with the iron bars and a ladder -- you'll know when you see it), as it is seriously dangerous if the rocks are wet or icy. I really shouldn't have taken the Eyebrow Trail today.
