Ascent Trip ReportFrom its intersection with CA 166 we drove 18.4 miles on the Soda Lake Road and parked along the road to start our hike up Caliente Mountain. With no detailed directions, our starting point on the Soda Lake Road was an arbitrary choice; it looked like a good spot to crawl through the fence to begin the cross-country approach. After walking a while on the level and passing an unattended complex of buildings, we reached lower Abbott Canyon about 10:30AM. Lowell remained behind, while Pete and I worked our way up the north side of the canyon through the chaparral, dense at times. We hit the old jeep road (4,600'), then followed it to the summit (2:30PM) and the abandoned lookout overlooking the Cuyama Valley. We returned more or less the same way, descending to the bottom of Abbott Canyon to meet Lowell at 5:30PM. In no rush, we sat here a while before hiking back across to the Lowell's truck at 7:00PM.
