Ascent Trip Report

OK, a mountain it is not. I concede. When you grow up in the Midwest, you gotta take what you can get. This hill represents the first summit of any kind I ever stood on. Sure, there's the sledding slope in my old neighborhood, but that, adventurous as it was for an 8 year old, is not a summit. Tower Hill qualifies as a summit because it slopes away on all sides. It could be called "Witch Hat Tower Hill" because the water tower at the summit looks like a Halloween witch hat perched on a collumn of concrete. The hike to the summit requires about one minute of modest effort. Enjoy!

The summit sits about 150 feet above the Missisppi River and does provide spectacular views (mostly to the west) of the City of Minneapolis...Including THE GOOD - The Mississippi River and the hardwood forests beyond; THE BAD - Glistening wasteful corporate skyscrapers, concrete attempts to tame the mighty river, as well as unbreathable smog as a result of what some call progress; and THE UGLY - Dire poverty amidst so much opulent wealth.

My friend (Corey) and I sat on its summit and drank Miller King Kans and vowed to each other that we would one day travel to the wilds of Northern Minnesota and live off the land for about three weeks. A summit epiphany - yes. Did we do it? Not yet I say (2009). There remains time...
