Ascent Trip Report

Several miles south of the Collier Tunnel on CA 199 turn east to follow the Jones Flat Rd (FSR 16--aka Jawbone Rd) for 10 miles, past FSR 17N04--the Bear Basin Rd), to a broad, open saddle which intersects the Ship Mountain Rd (a continuation of FR 16). Follow the Ship Mountain Rd for 6.7 miles south to the spur road to Ship Mountain #3 and its L.O. In 0.3 miles a locked gate bars vehicles from the remaining steep, narrow approach to the top and the tight turn-around area. Construction of a new L.O. is well underway. It is indeed rare to see a new L.O. being built these days when so many L.O.s are being decommissioned and abandoned.
