Ascent Trip ReportFrom CA 97 16 miles north of Weed take Deer Mountain Rd past the Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park (3.8 miles), continuing right on FSR 42N12 to FSR 42N24 (5.9 miles), then steeply up to a spur road 0.1 short of a locked gate on FSR 42N24. I followed the unsigned spur road 0.5 mile and parked on the west side of The Whaleback. After a gradual climb to a broad gap on the easily followed jeep road, I headed up through the trees over steepening but soft terrain to the summit ridge, then walked a short way to the high point. The view of Mt. Shasta's north side was dominant. There were several familiar names in the register, but relatively few people visit this easy peak. My route was 1+ mile from the 4Runner with about 1,000' of gain. The first register entry was by a 15-year old boy in 1984. Bill "Bighorn" Broeckel with his 3-year old daughter signed in on 8-31-90. Bill, from Yreka, was the second person after Gary Suttle to complete the CA CoHP list. |
