Ascent Trip Report

This was a scheduled hike with Pat Arredondo as the co-leader. Joining us was Mike Manning, Camille La Fredo and Robert Zueck. Camiklle and Robert only did Old Man. Old Man and Monte Arido are on the HPS list. East Slope is a Peakbagger peak. Due to a road closure, these peaks use to be a 6 mile round trip, 1200’gain. This was the old approach from the north. Now, one has to do a road hike of 25 miles up the Murietta Canyon with 6600’ of gain. Quite a difference.
We drove to the trailhead going north on 33 from Ojai 5 miles to the Matilija Lake road. Turn left and go 5 miles to a locked gate. Ample parking.. The road rises gently up 2000’ to Murietta Divide. There is a trail for 1.7 miles that parallels the road and is worth the side trip. It’s about the same distance as taking the road. At the Divide, take the road that makes a sharp right (north). Here the road has some steep sections and goes downhill in several places. About 4 miles up this road, you reach a saddle at 5000’. There is a well ducked use trail of about ½ mile and 500’ of gain to Old Man. For Monte Arido, from the saddle continue 2 miles on the road, 1000’ of gain, to the summit .
On the way back we did the East Slope. It is about ¼ mile before Monte Arido. I had plugged in the coordinates from Peakbagger. These coordinates place it north of the road. But there was nothing there. At that point, just south was a bump of about 50’. We summated that bump which we assume is East Slope.
