Ascent Trip Report

It's not one of the glamorous peaks in Red Rock's scenic panorama, but this one hits the spot if you are looking for a moderate, quiet climb. I started out from Calico Basin. The weather was calm, slightly cool, on this nice December morning. I walked NE towards the eastern flank of Kraft Mountain and when you reach Kraft's side, you can first see the peak sitting pretty up there slightly to your left. You can also see the long ridge that unwinds to the right from the peak and this ridge line was my target route. I crossed the Gateway Canyon wash. From here, I made a right to continue in a NE direction walking around the sandstone frontage that abuts the wash area then aiming for a saddle area that sits almost on the right end of the ridge line. At the saddle, it's a straight tussle along the ridge to the peak. The terrain is rocky, especially near the top, but it is very passable. The top is peaceful and you get a solitary feeling, a feeling of being distant, but you are just a few hops away from several popular attractions, such as Grey Cap and the Brownstone Petroglyphs. I'm glad I checked this one out.
