Ascent Trip ReportFrom CA 299 at Douglas City I took CA 3 over Hayfork Summit (3,654') to Big Creek Rd just east of Hayfork. A sign at this junction read "Hayfork Bally 19 miles;" my odometer read the distance as 17 miles. After 7.7 miles from CA 3 turn left off Big Creek Rd on FS 16; then after 5 miles a left turn on FSR 36N52, which ends after 4.2 miles at Hayfork Bally and the staffed L.O. I visited with the lookout person, checked out the USGS benchmark at a rocky outcrop, and also walked about 1/4 mile on a rough 4WD track to the bump that might be the high point but isn't. A shorter alternate route to Hayfork Bally is via FS 16 from Big Bar on CA 299.
