Ascent Trip Report

The approach: Drive 17.5 miles from Redway (near Garberville) on Shelter Cove Rd to King Peak Rd. This generally good dirt road travels north past Tolkan Camp (3.6 miles), Horse Mountain Creek TH (4.8 miles)and Horse Mountain Camp (6.3 miles), then on Saddle Mountain Rd past Saddle Mountain TH. At 9.3 miles turn on King Ridge Rd and proceed north for 6.3 miles to the Lightning TH. From here the well constructed and maintained trail climbs steadily upward with numerous switchbacks through the woods. After the turnoff at Maple Camp, the trail climbs into the open and along the ridge leading to the summit. No register or USGS benchmark found, although there were remains of a small concrete structure. Dramatic glimpses of the Pacific Ocean 4,000' below.
