Ascent Trip Report

A short distance SW of the CA 36 junction, turn off CA 32 and drive 10.2 miles on wide, well graded FSR 28N12 past Carter Meadow to the TH for Butt Mountain. The Carter Creek Trail rises gently for about 1.5 miles to a saddle (6,600') where it meets the PCT. From here the PCT climbs up to the divide to some rim volcanics, then switchbacks across forested slopes to climb above rugged cliffs. After climbing gradually along the crest, it dips before climbing to the signed turnoff for Butt Mountain, about a mile away. A fair use trail heads out of the forest into the open with the summit ridge coming into full view. Staying of the south side, I worked my way XC through a stable talus patch around a minor bump and up to the summit. Great views of Lassen Peak, Brokeoff Mountain, Mt. Diller, Lake Almanor. Gordon MacLeod and Barbara Lilley placed the register book in 2001, and I noted that Richard Carey and Gail Hanna had signed in on 8-9-03.
