Ascent Trip ReportI had planned to drive FS 1 from Eel River Station east of Covelo over Hull Mountain to Lake Pillsbury. However, at the Forest Service in Covelo I learned that M1 would likely still be blocked by snow at the higher elevations. Nevertheless, I drove M1 to Mexico and Etsel Ridges past Grizzly Flat and Coffee Mill Flat to FS M61 near Bald Mountain. I continued about 8 miles from this junction before encountering significant snow on the road which blocked my further progress. I returned to M61, followed it through remote territory 9 miles to M6, which connected with M1 in another 15 miles. Back on M1 I drove 7.3 miles up the steep, fairly rough road up Boardman Ridge to the summit area of Hull Mountain. The site of the former L.O. is a few hundred feet from where I parked. Great views in all directions: Lake Pillsbury, Sanhedrin Mountain, Goat Mountain,Snow Mountain, Anthony Peak, and the extensive wilderness to the north. After my visit, I drove back down the south side of Hull Mountain on M1 to Lake Pillsbury, then Potter Valley, and U.S. 101. |
