Ascent Trip Report

I wanted to take my boys up to Mary's Peak to get a bit of exercise before having Thanksgiving dinner. Driving up to the Mary's Peak turnoff from Alsea Hwy, there was a sign that Mary's Peak Road was "closed" at 5.5 mi in. Sure enough, just past the turnoff to Conner's Camp, both gates were closed with a "no admittance" sign for hikers too. The trail from Conner's Camp Trailhead was also marked closed. We were starting to see snow on the shoulders and ice on the road, and the view of Mary's Peak from a distance was it was covered with snow, so I'm not certain how much further we could have driven in any case. Here's what I found on the USFS website on my return, including that it's closed Fall 2015 without stating when it may reopen:
The Mary's Peak meadow restoration project is designed to restore vistas and open meadow habitat to historic levels within the ecologically significant botanical area. Due to a variety of factors, including past and present human activities on the peak, trees had begun to grow into the meadows. Not only do these trees impact the scenic view, but they’re also changing the ecology of the meadows, which are a rare and important ecosystem in the Oregon Coast Range.
In order to get the work done safely, it is necessary to keep visitors out of the way of heavy logging equipment, as well as falling trees, broken tree limbs, debris and more that can accumulate while the work is being done. By respecting the closures, individuals will ensure their own safety, the safety of the workers, and will allow the project to proceed as quickly and efficiently as possible. When the trails and day use areas reopen, visitors will enjoy vistas restored to their historic range.
