Ascent Trip Report

Mt. Moriah, a prominent but little climbed peak in the Snake Range north of Sacramento Pass, was the culmination of an outing organized by Vicky Hoover of the Sierra Club’s S.F.Bay Chapter to acquaint peak climbers with infrequently visited ranges in eastern Nevada. Members of the Toiyabe Chapter and Desert Peaks Section were included in the group of 17 participants. The previous peaks climbed during the week were Corduroy Mountain, Currant Mountain, and Blue Eagle Mountain, which was substituted for North and South Schell Peaks after they were blanketed by an unexpected snowfall. On July 3 we drove north from the junction of U.S. 50/6 and the Baker Hwy on a good dirt road (with several intersections)to its end on Hendrys Creek at the national forest boundary. From this TH we backpacked up a jeep track, staying near the creek (with an occasional easy ford). After about 3 miles, it morphs into a good use trail, which we followed for another 3-4 miles up the canyon to a camping area (9,200')surrounded by aspen and close to the crystal-clear water of Hendrys Creek. There were many wildflowers to brighten the way, and it was a surprise to find a few bristlecone pine growing as low as 7,000'. On July 4 we climbed Mt. Moriah, first continuing up the faint, unmaintained pack trail shown on the topo map to a main ridge which took us over the NE peak and then to the summit of Mt. Moriah. Great views, sunny skies, but strong wind with some gale-force gusts kept us from a relaxing break. With a time constraint Pete and I had to leave the others early while they checked out the unique flat area known as The Table on the north side of Mt. Moriah. (Thanks to John Hart's book, "Hiking the Great Basin," pp. 259-263, and Campy's TR that appears in the SPS archives.)
